Panoramic View Windows in Timber Frames
The most common thing clients ask for on a mountain build is some version of “I want the view in the room.”
What they mean is glass — lots of it, floor to ceiling, uninterrupted. No posts breaking the sightline. No wall between the room and what’s outside.
The structural question that the request creates is: what carries the load above that glass? Because whatever is above the window — roof, floor, deck — still has to get to the ground. If you’re removing the posts and walls that usually carry that load, something else has to do the job.
In light-frame construction, that usually means a big beam. The beam spans the opening; the load goes overhead; the view is clear below. It works, but there’s a practical limit to how far a timber beam can span without getting so deep that it becomes the visual feature of the room rather than what you see through it.
For longer spans, steel opens up options that timber alone can’t match. A steel bow-string truss, for example, can carry a significant roof load across a wide opening — 30, 40 feet or more — with a structural profile that sits above the ceiling plane and stays out of sight. The view is unobstructed. The structure is invisible. The engineering is doing exactly what it should.
On the High Plains Drifter project, the clients wanted uninterrupted lake views from every corner of the living space. No posts. No walls break the sightline at any angle. The structure had to span the full width of the room without anything landing in the middle. We designed custom steel bowstring trusses to carry the load overhead, resulting in a room where the view really is the architecture. The structure stays entirely out of it.
Opening a wall to a panoramic view isn’t complicated in principle. In practice, it requires knowing what the structure above it is doing and having a plan that doesn’t compromise the engineering or the view. That’s a problem we’ve solved before.
