Modern Mountain Home

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

This was one of our favourite projects.  Built for a long time friend and Queen’s engineering classmate of KRT founder, Dave Petrina the home was one of the more contemporary projects we’ve done.  Kettle River played a creative role in the timber design including coming up with the unique steel-timber truss design.  Kettle River also designed and built the beautiful open timber staircase incorporating oak treads with Douglas fir stringers stained black to complement the steel elements throughout the house.  The balustrade on the stairs was carefully chosen to mirror the ironwork on the trusses in the greatroom.  Designing elegant timberwork for the Whistler climate is always a challenge as the massive snow loads often result in very chunky timber frames.  The use of the double rafters and the steel tension chord on the truss helped to keep the chunkiness in check.
